Museums - Aeronautical Engineering Museum Rechlin
the testing site at the Mritz
In 1916, the Prussian War Office, announced the setup of extensive aeronautical facilities at the south bank of the Lake Müritz. On the 29.08.1918, the 'Aeronautical-Research and Teaching Institute at Lake Müritz' went into operation.
With the defeat in the First World War, the development of the research institute ended. In 1925, the secret flight operation is taken up again. From 1933onwards, the facilities are being built again on a large scale.
In 1934, the village Rechlin had to give way to the construction of the testing site for German airforce on the southeast bank of the Müritz.
During the 'Third Reich', prototypes and pilot production series of all landplanes and its armaments are being tested here. During this time, the region is being developed - the first housing estates are being built.
After the end of the 2nd World War, sections of the testing site, housing estates and the airfield Lärz are being used by the Soviet respective the GSOFG air force, until 1993.
Also on the terrain of the testing site, the shipyard Schiffswerft Rechlin, founded in 1948, becomes a special operation for the development and construction of rescue boats and is until 1989, the biggest industrial company in the district of Neustrelitz. Since the summer of 1998, an exhibition in the historical buildings of the testing site Rechlin (main sentry group north) opened and is constantly expanding.
On the basis of numerous exhibits, the then status of aeronautical engineering and the role of the testing site is being depicted.
The depiction of the regional historical development after 1945 - shipyard, Soviet and GSOFG-occupation period, NVA and German army - completes the picture about the community Rechlin.
