Bear Forest Mueritz - there taps a bear

Unfortunately, many brown bears still don't live in an animal appropriate environment in Germany. For example: as a circus attraction, their living space is not bigger than a transport cage.

For the bears, this sad existence is a lifelong experience. Apart from concrete and grates, they don't see anything.

Our bear Otto was born in 1992 and came with Mascha to the Bear Forest. He is around 2m big and weighs 220 kg.

When bears are not kept in their natural habitat, they can't be released into the wild ever again.

It is a big problem, where are the animals going live after they have been to rescued?

Mascha was born 1994 and came together with Otto to the Bear Forest in 2006.

Lothar is the biggest and heaviest bear in the forest. Erected, he is over 2m big and brings 270 kilogramme onto the scale. His distinctive bulging eyebrows and his strong neck muscle, give him a fierce appearance. In reality, he is amenable, lively and inquisitive.

He was born in 1990 and was, with his sister, the first occupant, when the sanctuary was opened on the 13.10.2006.

Sindi is Lothar's sister and was the second occupant, who moved here.
In May 2007, Susi moved in, thus being the fifth bear.

The target of the project Bear Forest Müritz, is to take in bear from non animal-friendly husbandry and give them until their natural end a species-appropriate habitat. Hopefully, behavioural disorders will disappear.
